A United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket will launch NASA’s next flagship Mars rover in the 2020 interplanetary launch window to embark on an investigation focused on the astrobiological aspects of Martian evolution. The rover, largely based on the design of the Curiosity Mars Science Laboratory Rover, will carry nine instruments to investigate the the Martian surface and its geological processes and history including an assessment of past habitability and the preservation of biosignatures within accessible geological materials. To send the rover on its way, Atlas V will employ its 541 configuration with four Solid Rocket Boosters.
