Europe’s Ariane 5 ECA rocket will launch the BepiColombo spacecraft on a 7.2-year odyssey through the inner Solar System that will include nine planetary flybys of Earth, Venus and Mercury before the spacecraft can enter orbit around Mercury. Widely regarded as the most challenging long-term planetary project, BepiColombo sets out to collect invaluable data for the study of how rocky planets form. The BepiColombo mission consists of two orbiters – the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter MMO, operated by JAXA, and the Mercury Planetary Orbiter MPO, operated by ESA. MPO will study the surface and internal composition of Mercury while MMO will examine the planet’s magnetic field.
