Soyuz to launch Hispasat 36W-1
A Russian-built Soyuz rocket is set for liftoff from the Guiana Space Center Friday night on its first Geostationary Transfer Orbit mission from French Guiana, carrying the Hispasat 36W-1 communications satellite. Switched from Ariane 5 to avoid waiting for a slot on Europe's heavy-lifter, H36W-1 is looking forward to a 32-minute ride on the Soyuz into a highly elliptical orbit. The mission marks the record GTO payload for the Soyuz/Fregat combination, taking the vehicle right to the upper edge of its performance.
