Opened in 1980, Pad 39 hosted a number of notable planetary launches to Venus and Mars as well as the launch of the core module of the Mir Space Station. Having supported over 160 missions, Pad 39 is now primarily used for commercial Proton missions under the auspices of International Launch Services.
